History
of The Denton Black Chamber of Commerce
The
Denton Black Chamber of Commerce was created in 1995 for the express
purpose of helping with the Creation, Expansion and Proliferation of
African American owned business. During the summer of 1995 in the
Barber shop of Billy and Raymond Redmon, a number of area Black
businessmen and women were discussing the difficulties they were
experiencing in growing and expanding their businesses.
While
the efforts of the greater chamber were good, the specific interests
of the African-American community were not at the top the list
of issues for the greater chamber. Earlier that
year the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce was also begun. There
were a number of discussions about the new chambers and whether their
existence would increase the divide in the city along racial lines.
There
used to be just one team in town and it was especially hard for
members of the minority community to get to play and make a
difference in their community. The Denton Black Chamber is a team of
business people working together to have an impact within the
African-American community in the City of Denton and Denton County.
The
Denton Black Chamber of Commerce Mission Statement
The
Denton Black Chamber of Commerce is an organization celebrating
years of services in Denton County. We embrace capitalism and all the
good it affords. We the chamber represents many facets of the
community, working together to create grow and proliferate African
American owned businesses.
All
races political affiliation and socioeconomic levels are welcomed to
join. Our common goal is to make the American dream come true for all
citizens. We also work with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the
Denton Chamber of Commerce ("Big Chamber") on economic
development and employment issues.
