Blues Fest
The
Denton Blues Festival- the History of the Festival
In
1996 the chamber was looking for a signature event that the chamber
could call its own. The Arts and Jazz Festival had recently
moved from the September corridor to the Spring time corridor and
called itself the Spring Fling. The chamber's first foray into
an event was to schedule an African -American Music and Arts Fest
with a major event in the Campus Theatre. Not wanting to
compete with the Springtime Jazz Festival we went to a Gospel
Extravaganza the next year, where we spotlighted all of the choirs in
Denton County and young Christian artists that were up and coming.
One
of the Board members, Mr. Emmett Jones , of Pine Bluff, Arkansas
spoke of how universal the Blues were, and how everyone could enjoy
and relate to the Blues. There was a vote on whether or not to
have a Blues Festival and it was decided unanimously that we should
have a Blues Festival. Since that date in 1998, we have been trying
to bring a great venue of talent to the town of Denton, Texas, for
all the citizens and good music lovers of this community to enjoy.
We
normally have a great crowd of people come from all over the
Metroplex, as well as from East Texas, Oklahoma and points
northward. Since its beginning, we have had a number of Blues
stars who are no longer with us, such as Johnny Taylor the Blues
wailer, Little Milton, Tyrone Davis, Willie Hutch and some of the
great names that are still with us, Denise LaSalle, Bobby Blue Bland,
Lattimore, and many others. Please continue to join us as we
continue to make history. Our dream concert would be one with Mr.
B.B. King and Mr. Willie Nelson.

The Denton Black Chamber would like to thank each and everyone who
participated in this event and made it a great success. Our Blues
Fest next year will be on September 20, 2008 at Quaker Town Park.
These are some of the photo that captured the moment.
